TIPS: Your Cheatin' Mail

If you noticed the time stamp on the email, you would notice it's like almost three months back. Yup. This is one of the 80 pending posts on my blog. Today, we'll be looking at The Digital Age Robbers- the headline news on Malaysia's The Star newspaper on 27th of May 2011. According to Wikipedia, phishing is a way of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

I am sure your email boxes are full of spams almost everyday, and in between these spam mails, often are some mails that are cleverly disguised as financial institutions' email (banks), online store notifications and so on. A few examples of those emails that I've received are the ones below. You should notice some minor mistakes in the email, such as weird links that supposedly bring you to the purported site. I don't even have a Maybank account! But if you have one, do not click on the link that is given in the email. Instead, type in the your online banking's address in your address bar to go directly to their website. 

Besides, as many Malaysians spend a lot of time on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, you should also be aware that these scams are also waiting to strike you there. Read my previous blog post - Wah! Got Free Subway Meh?

You're invited to Royal Wedding 2.0 - Watch The Royal Wedding Online - Prince William & Catherine Middleton

You are invited to Prince William & Catherine Middleton's wedding!

The Royal officials unveiled an official Youtube channel - TheRoyalChannel on Tuesday and invites users from all around the globe to watch Prince William & Catherine Middleton's wedding on the 29th of April 2011, 10am London time (5pm Malaysian time). The Youtube live stream will be provided by BBC, although there will be no commentary provided. (Our The Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong of Malaysia are invited too! If you miss the livestream, Youtube said it will replay the footage immediately after the event and will be available to view it anytime later.

NTV 7 (Malaysia) also broadcast the wedding live starting at 3pm Malaysian time (GMT +8) although the wedding will only start at 5pm.

NEWS + TIPS - How to turn off Facebook Email Notifications

Apparently, Facebook reset all your email notification settings. This means that you'll now receive email notifications for all Facebook updates, unless you turn it off.

Here's how to turn your notifications off:

• Sign in to Facebook.

• Click Account in the upper right corner and select Account Settings.

• Select the Notifications tab and remove the check next to the alerts you do not want to receive.

NEWS: Blogger has a new look

Google has just introduced a few new ways to read blog posts on its blogging platform - Blogger. As long as you go to a blogger-powered blog, say http://techknew.blogspot.com , just add "/view" to the end of the URL, which becomes like http://techknew.blogspot.com/view , you'll be able to see the new look and features in there. TRY NOW http://techknew.blogspot.com/view

 It offers the types of views below.
"Snapshot: Snapshot turns blog photos into a Polaroid-esque scrapbook with the number of comments and the title of the blog post clearly visible. Hovering over a Polaroid displays a short snippet from the post.


Sidebar: Similar in some ways to Gawker‘s redesign, Sidebar creates a left-hand menu bar with all of a blog’s articles as well as their comment counts. Clicking on a title opens the article to the right.


Timeslide: This is a three-column layout that displays recent posts. The left column shows photos and short snippets from a blog’s most recent articles, while the middle column displays only summaries of less recent posts. The right-hand column is simply a list of titles of older articles. Timeslide essentially encompasses three different time periods and makes them accessible.


Flipcard: This visual view places square photos side-by-side in neat little rows. Hovering over any photo reveals the name of the post, the date it was published and the number of comments it has. Flipcard has the unique option of reorganizing posts based on recency, date, label or author.

Mosaic: Mosaic takes the photos related to each blog post and turns them into a visual experience — a mosaic of photography. LMAO NEWS: OMG! WAGs! Added To Oxford English Dictionary! LOL!

WAG: Surprisingly, this has been added to the dictionary, probably due to the fact that Oxford comes from UK and the press uses them as much as LOL!

The online abbreviations like LOL, OMG, BFF, TMI and IMHO (and WAGs!!!) are now part of the official English language. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online has updated the dictionary in March 2011 and it is interesting to see how the online culture can change how we communicate nowadays. The power of social media?

Perhaps, one day, "ching chong" and "ling long" will be in the dictionary :D What's the two terms? Check out the video. It's a good video response to Alexandra Wallace's vlog (what's the vlog about? Check it out here.).

My blog is carbon neutral

According to a study by Alexander Wissner-Gross, PhD, physicist at Harvard University and environmental activist, an average website causes about 0.02g (0,0008oz.) of carbon dioxide for each visit. Assuming an average blog gets 15,000 visits a month, it has yearly carbon dioxide emissions of 3,6kg (8lb.). This can mainly be tracked back to the immense energy usage from (mainframe) computers, servers, and their cooling systems. TechKNEW has a new layout & Google News has been updated

*Techknew has a new layout!*

After a half month hiatus and semester break, finally, Techknew is updated. I'll recommended videos on KnewTube.blogspot.com and weird or unknown facts on KnewFacts.blogspot.com. Do check them out ya~!

For a restart, Google News is on the news today as it has been updated to allow each user to have a personalized news page according to one's interest.

The Google News' home page is slightly tweaked with the trending top stories listed on the left side bar whereas the News Edition settings has been switched to the right (as shown below). 

There is a new "Add a section"(as shown below) beside the News Editions settings which allows you to add different news categories such as Social Networking News, Mobile Technology News and more. 

Lastly, another notable update is this "News for you" in the middle of the Google News home. This allows you to customize how often you would like to read news from each section and add topics you follow.

Google TV: TV meets web. Web meets TV: Will it work for Google?

Google started their Google I/O 2010 with the announcement of the new Google TV application, which will be used on set-top boxes and HD TVs.

Will it work for Google? 

From a search engine, and diversifying into online advertising (Adsense), email provider (Gmail), web-based document processing and data storage service (Google Docs), video sharing (Youtube),  and then venturing into the operating systems and web browser sector (Chrome, Android and Chrome OS), Google Earth, Buzz, Picasa, Google Maps, Wave, Google Mobile, Google Desktop, Google Checkout, Google Books Google Talk, Orkut, Google Video and now with Google Labs, Google has not stop introducing new products and services. Now it is Google TV.

Seeing so many new products, it seems that Google has a big market share on each individual product's market. However, it seems that not many people are using these softwares or services, especially Google Chrome, Google Docs, Wave, Buzz and Picasa.

As we can see Google Chrome's market share hasn't been stellar even though it is very use friendly with the introduction of bookmark sync and less clutters.

The dominating Microsoft (91% market share - Netmarketshare) has been bundling it's Internet Explorer with it's Windows operating systems, forcing users to use it. Of course, users will still use IE as many users such as colleges, universities(yes, i requested for Google Chrome and it was rejected.) and companies will not download any third party browsers as the operating system is preloaded with the web browser IE. Yes. Google's softwares are very useful, however, as we can see Google Docs, Orkut and Buzz, but all did not receive much buzz and hype as compared to Facebook, Windows Live Messenger and the user paid Microsoft Office. It is because it is not easy for Google to encourage users to change their email services from Hotmail to Gmail, from Facebook to Buzz and Microsoft Office to Google Docs because we know change is not easy. Perhaps something new, savvy and innovative can spark interest. Not easy though, we can see it from the Buzz (Initially, it forces all Google users to follow and be followed by fellow Google users) and Nexus One case. Now, with the iPad and and iPhone slated to be out on the 7th of June, Google need to do more in understanding the way people use the internet and software.

Can Google come out of the internet and go into that flat tvs? All we can do is wait and see.
