TIPS: Fetch.io fetches your torrents and downloads so you don't have to wait for them

Featured on LifeHacker, Fetch.io was quite a hit a few weeks ago. It is a cloud storage with an additional twist to it. It fetches files for you and doubles as a media player, which enables you to stream audio, video and images right in the account itself. It allows you to download large files from torrent, Rapidshare, Megaupload, Mediafire, Fileserve, Netload.in, Filesonic, Easy-Share and Megashares within minutes and then allows you to play the media files or download them after the transfer to Fetch.io is done. It allows you to have a 20GB storage and another 10GB dedicated for transfer.

All you need to do is open an account, paste the links and proceed to fetch the files into your account.The only addon you need is a DivX Web Player in your browser. It will prompt you to install the player if you intend to play the videos directly in the web browser (I am using Google Chrome).

If you noticed the time stamp on the email, you would notice it's like almost three months back. Yup. This is one of the 80 pending posts on my blog. Today, we'll be looking at The Digital Age Robbers- the headline news on Malaysia's The Star newspaper on 27th of May 2011. According to Wikipedia, phishing is a way of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

I am sure your email boxes are full of spams almost everyday, and in between these spam mails, often are some mails that are cleverly disguised as financial institutions' email (banks), online store notifications and so on. A few examples of those emails that I've received are the ones below. You should notice some minor mistakes in the email, such as weird links that supposedly bring you to the purported site. I don't even have a Maybank account! But if you have one, do not click on the link that is given in the email. Instead, type in the your online banking's address in your address bar to go directly to their website.

Besides, as many Malaysians spend a lot of time on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites, you should also be aware that these scams are also waiting to strike you there. Read my previous blog post - Wah! Got Free Subway Meh?

If you are like me, who opens a new tab whenever we see something interesting to read, usually have more tabs than anyone can read. This can be a inefficient as switching and finding the tabs that we actually want can be daunting when we have 80 tabs opened at once. This also takes up a lot of memory as the each Google Chrome tab runs as a separate process (Be sure to read my next post next week on another tips on this!).

One too many tabs: Use Read it Later's extension to help you manage your tabs

Fortunately, Read it Later came out with the extensions for almost all the major web browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari), but it also works in other browsers by logging into your account. This allows you to mark those links that might interest you to a reading list, so that you can access it anywhere with virtually all devices, including your iPhone, iPod, iPad, Android phones/tablets , WebOS phones and Blackberry phones.

You can add the links in both ways, either by clicking on the button beside the omnibar/address bar and click on "mark as unread" or you can also right-click on the link and select "Save Link to Read Later".

TIPS: Google Translate's Speech feature + Update Google Chrome

Google translate now has a new feature. To show off the new feature, Google's own Translate site has been updated with a microphone icon that lets you speak the words you'd like translated. The microphone doesn't appear unless you've updated Chrome to 11. No other current browser displays the microphone icon.The speech input worked perfectly, though it only accepts English.

To use this new feature, you'll need:
-Google Chrome 11 (Update your Chrome now or Download Google Chrome if you haven't)

Click and select "About Google Chrome" to update Google Chrome. It should update, if it doesn't update automatically.

Apparently, Facebook reset all your email notification settings. This means that you'll now receive email notifications for all Facebook updates, unless you turn it off.

Here's how to turn your notifications off:

Click Account in the upper right corner and select Account Settings.

Hold CTRL + T to get the character window.

Hold SHIFT + Drag to drag a pixel without distorting the image/text and to draw shapes.

Hold CTRL + Z Undo.

Rotate an image using mouse or mouse + SHIFT key.

Duplicate text/image using CTRL + C and CTRL + V.

Click Polygon Tool from shapes then hold ALT + click on the white space to create triangle.

Click on Transparency and adjust the opacity to create transparency on the shapes.

Hold CTRL + R for ruler. Drag the ruler to get a guide line. CTRL + : to remove the line.

Hold SHIFT + F7 to align.

Right-click the text to Create Outlines and right click again to Ungroup and again to Release Compound Path to play with the font.

Hold SHIFT then DRAG the image/text then hold ALT to duplicate them. (SHIFT is to align the image/text)

Pathfinder can be used to combined different layers by clicking Window -- Pathfinder -- Unite, as long as the layers touch each other.

Creating outlines and CTRL + 7 will delete the layers below.

"Snapshot: Snapshot turns blog photos into a Polaroid-esque scrapbook with the number of comments and the title of the blog post clearly visible. Hovering over a Polaroid displays a short snippet from the post.

Timeslide: This is a three-column layout that displays recent posts. TIPS: How to bypass New York Times' Paywall

I just got blocked after 20 articles and the screenshot above appeared on The New York Times online.

As you may have known by now, The New York Times (NYTimes) has already imposed a paywall for its service and only allow you to read 20 free articles for a month. Readers can also view 25 free articles per day through search, and an unlimited number via blogs and social networks. The charges for its access is as below and can be found here:

$15 for four weeks of access to NYTimes.com and a mobile phone app.
$20 for four weeks of access to NYTimes.com and its iPad app.
$35 for four weeks of access to all of the above

However, currently, NYTimes is only charging 99¢ for the first month (four weeks) according to its website.

The online abbreviations like LOL, OMG, BFF, TMI and IMHO (and WAGs!!!) are now part of the official English language. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online has updated the dictionary in March 2011 and it is interesting to see how the online culture can change how we communicate nowadays. The power of social media?

HOW TO+REVIEW: Firefox 4 and how it should look like Google Chrome and Opera

Firefox 4 was released less than a week ago and the download statistics can be seen in this interactive page made by Mozilla here. While I was writing this, there was already a whooping 28,726,286 downloads around the world, with Kuala Lumpur having 128,366 downloads and Malaysia having a total of 258,604 downloads. This post will have a review section and followed by a how to section on how to tweak some of the annoying settings in the new Firefox 4.

Review:

At first glance, Firefox 4 looks like Opera 11 (I sometimes use this as I can continue downloads even if I close my browser) and little like Google Chrome (my favourite browser!). It has two new cool functions here. Firstly, it's the new Firefox Sync, which allows you sync with different devices (Firefox for Android/N900 - get it here) and multiple computers. This is great, as I tried Google Chrome's sync with my portable Google Chrome as I go around in uni. Firefox already has a page dedicated to how you can sync your devices here.

The next new thing is my favourite in Firefox 4, is the "Tab Groups" or Panorama. It allows you group tabs together in a tab group according to your interests, like separating your work and leisure web surfings. You can do it by clicking on the top right corner of your page. All you need to do is drag anywhere in the space to create a new tab group or you can simply drag a tab onto another tab and a new tab group will appear.

Tab Groups/Panorama: Awesome stuff

The only thing is that Firefox loads webpages a little slower than Google Chrome (I tried loading up http://www.facebook.com/ with both at the same time 3 times).

HOW TO:

As the new Firefox's new look is a little annoying, you can tweak it below. The numbers will indicate the before and after look, and as an indication of what will be tweaked.

1: That is the "Tab Group"/Panorama button. Click that to see the new function.

2: The new "Firefox menu button is at the top, which wastes some space for surfing the net. All you need to do is Download and install the addon "Movable Firefox Button 1.3" here.

After restarting the browser, go to Firefox Menu ---> Options ---> Toolbar Layout and you can drag it to the position in the picture.

3: You can move the refresh button by going to the Firefox Menu ---> Options ---> Toolbar Layout, and drag it to the left of the address bar, just like in the picture.

4: Finally, the most annoying one, for Firefox users, is that the tabs that is now above the address bar. Move the tabs to below the address bar, by going to Firefox Menu ---> Options and uncheck (or click) "Tabs on Top". Enjoy! I hope you can share this with your friends and have a better Firefox experience.

5 (not numbered): Drag the Google Search bar away. Go to Firefox Menu ---> Options ---> Toolbar Layout, and drag the Google toolbar into the "Customize Toolbar" window, because you can now search right at the address bar.

Opera 11 Lookalike (before): A lot of space is wasted with the new Firefox button on the top left corner.

A better look (after): After tweaking the settings, this is how it should look like.

These are some of the shortcuts in Windows. I've spent quite long just to create the icons. I hope you'll read through this post and try the shortcuts as you go.

The most frequent used Windows shortcuts for me:
: Maximize the current window

: If the current window is maximized, restore it; if the current window is restored, minimize it

: Dock the current window to the left half of the screen (You get to split your screen into two halves this way)

: Dock the current window to the right half of the screen (You get to split your screen into two halves this way)

: Close the active window or Shut Down when there is no active window

: Switch to previous active window

: Flip 3D (This is cool. Try this immediately. As in right now :D)

: Minimize all but the current window

: Open the projection menu (generally used for laptops connected to projectors)

: Cycle through all open windows

: Show desktop

After a few months, eightbit.me is finally opened to everyone! WooHoo! It means rather than using Photoshop, all of us can use it to create our own pixelated avatar more easily!! You don't need to have computer skills to do it. Just a Twitter account and clicking will do!

At first, I thought it was awesome to have the lightbox effect in Facebook, then after a while, it became really annoying I think, for most of us. fortunately, WE HAVE AN ESCAPE ROUTE FOR THAT!!

Just get the extension for Google Chrome or addon for your Mozilla Firefox!

You may think why it does not work after you have installed the extension/addon. Just close your Facebook tab and reopen a new tab for Facebook, it should work.

Get your hands on the new Avast Antivirus 6 which was launched yesterday! It is the second free antivirus software which offers the sandboxing feature in their free version. Its AutoSandbox allows you to run programs that it suspects as threats in a virtualised state so that it will not damage your system. CNET gave it a 4.5/5 star and the editor's review (Seth Rosenblatt) can be read here. I personally use Avast 5.0 and now 6.0 after Avira's free antivirus slows down my PC last year. It's fast and it updates really quickly too!

Qwiki - A wiki that is better than Wikipedia?

If you think Wikipedia is too long winded, why not try Qwiki, as it offers a more interactive and simpler explanation of a topic that you want to understand.

All you need to do is to type in the topic that you want to know, for instance, "Gorilla" and an interactive player will explain gorilla to you interactively (voice, image, subtitle). You can zoom into the images by clicking on them and the player will pause automatically, allowing you to look more detail into the images.

After that, you can share it on Facebook, tweet about it and also embed it on your website/blog. And if you think that the information is insufficient, just click on Wikipedia, Google, Fotopedia or Youtube (on the left side of the page after the explanation ends) for more information. Clicking on them search the topics you intended to know on the respective database/search engine.

Review: Rockmelt-The social browser

Do you know that you can subscribe techknew through email? Click the "Subscribe" button. Techknew has an online store too - Techknew Online Store.

Launched at the end of last year, Rockmelt.com was one of the top tweeted trends on December 13, 2010. It is the new social media web browser, built based on Chromium (Google's open-source project). Naturally, it has the usual Google Chrome look.

Basically, it allows you to browse the web without having to open a new tab specifically for Facebook or Twitter. It also allows you to get feeds from sites by entering the site's URL or manually approving it when you browse a website. These feeds will appear on the right side of the browser(called App Edge).

On the left side of the browser (Friend edge), you will see your friends who are currently online.

You can easily share stuff online by click the share button just right beside the address bar too!

And, whenever there's updates or new feeds, there will be pop-ups on your taskbar (just like Windows Live Messenger's pop-ups) and it can be disabled at the "Options" tab. If you use Google Chrome on a normal basis, there is not much different from it.

Just logon to Rockmelt.com and click "Connect with Facebook" and "Authorise it" for their beta invite. Within 48 hours, come back to Rockmelt.com and the "Download" button will be there. Just download and install it.

After installation, just sign in into your Facebook account (sign in your Twitter account later) and allow for all the request for permission.

Remember to close Google Chrome if you want to import your Chrome settings into Rockmelt.

Enjoy your new browsing experience with Rockmelt! If you need some guide around Rockmelt, type in "rockmelt://help/" (without the inverted commas) within the Rockmelt browser.

Introducing Malaysia's new social network.

Yup. That's right. 1Malaysia.com, very close to our Prime Minister's 1Malaysia.com.my.

I signed up after I saw Jason Goh's (@smashpOp) twitter post.

How was 1Malaysia.com?

The VERDICT:

1: Signing up was pretty easy. I got it all up in 3 minutes. There is no verification mail though, so I guess someone else can set up an account in your email and name without your consent.

2: My first impression on 1Malaysia.com was it looks like Apple's website.

3:They have the "Like" and Comment button. You can share links, video, photo and also Music. You will have your own wall and a public wall (that's what i call it). The homepage will be the public wall, where you can share links, video, photo and also Music and the whole community can see it.

4: How is it different from Facebook? There is this music sharing function where you can upload your music/songs and share it with the whole community. You will be able to add your favorite uploads to your own playlist.

Besides, you can share videos, photos and even create groups in the 1Malaysia community.

There is also a forum but it doesn't allow you to delete your post after you've created one :(

5: Lastly, any privacy concerns? They allow you to tweet the privacy settings, but not as advanced as Facebook's though.

Conclusion: Should you join? Well, it's still a very new site with 12,357 members (as at 25/1/2011 12.37AM GMT+8). I don't see a point quitting Facebook for this yet because there's no applications and I did not see any photo tagging function also.

The Star's mStar has reported about it on the 17th of January 2011 in this article 1malaysia.com sedia ganti Facebook, though i don't think it will replace Facebook until they release the codes for application developers.

Imgur, share your images easily.

Introducing Imgur.com. Imgur (pronounced as image-er; imager.) allows you to share images online without having to open an account. As long as your image file is less than 10MB, you can upload it to Imgur and share it with your friends. You may ask how long will the image be on Imgur. On it's FAQ page, it says that as long as your images are getting at least 1 view every 3 months, they will stick around forever. After that, your image may be removed to create more space for newer images. Besides, your pictures will be anonymous, which means that no one knows who posted what and private images will not be made public.

If your pictures gained a certain popularity, it will be added to the Gallery and you can look for the trending ones on Topsy- a real time search engine for Twitter.

Can the images be deleted after you upload it? Yes. There will be a "Deletion Link" at the bottom left after you uploaded the picture (Refer to the picture below). Remember, the deletion link only shows up once, so make sure you save a copy of it just in case you want to delete it in the future.

Format of Image allowed: JPEG, GIF, PNG, APNG, TIFF, BMP, PDF, XCF (GIMP). Please note that the TIFF, BMP, PDF and XCF formats will be converted to PNG on upload.

Size: A maximum of 10MB and those over 1MB will automatically be compressed or resized to 1MB, for better viewing.

Thoughts on the Life Online Show #LOLshow

Hello everyone. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Recently, I listen to this podcast called the Life Online Show or #LOLshow in short.

I started listening to it after I saw Niki Cheong's post on his blog. John Lim, Niki Cheong, David Lian and David Wang are the crews of the #LOLshow! #LOLshow is my 1st podcast and I think it was quite good. The podcast talks about the latest development of social media in the world and also in Malaysia. I thought it was great as it was not as long as This Week in Tech (TWiT) by Leo Laporte and it is more into the local scene as compared to TWiT which oftens talks about issues which happens in the USA. John Lim, Niki Cheong, David Lian and David Wang will share their views on the lastest issues like the roll out of YTL's Yes 4G in Malaysia, Twitter's new guidelines, Facebook's new profile page, Wikileaks, Gap's new logo and the suicide of Alviss Kong on Facebook. Some of the views are quite good, an example would be David Wang's view on the proposed ISP Liability Act in Malaysia (Listen to it on #LOLshow Episode 8).

Another thing I like about the #LOLshow is that there will be a web tip given every week. And of course thank you David Wang for the Groupsmore tip on #LOLshow Episode 4.

My suggestion is that a guest on #LOLshow would be really good. The current length for the show is appropriate for me. Overall, i think that #LOLshow is a great effort done by John Lim, Niki Cheong, David Lian and David Wang (The mic is louder now.. haha..)! I guess it must be difficult for all of you to meet up to record the show online every week? Thank you again for the great work!

If your music sounds fine in Windows Media Player but sounds bad in iTunes, here's how you can tweak the settings.

Steps:
1) Open up Apple QuickTime (NOT iTunes).------------------------------------------------------>
2) Click "Edit" --> "Preferences" --> "QuickTime Preferences"
3) Then select the "Audio" tab above.
4) Then look out for "Safe mode (waveOut only)". Select that setting.
5) Click "Apply". (The sound quality should improve by now.)
